Six Different Cities

Six Different Cities

She’d signed a lease in six different cities over nine years. Each time, she unpacked the same boxes, hung the same curtains, and told her kids this was temporary. When the orders came for NAS Pensacola, she almost didn’t let herself hope for anything different.

The Navy family who reached out to us last spring had lived the transient life well – they were pros at quick moves and making do. But this assignment felt different. Her husband would have three years at NAS Pensacola, possibly longer. Their oldest would start high school. And for the first time in nearly a decade, they wondered: what if we stopped renting?

The hesitation was real. What if orders changed? What if the market shifted? What if they were setting themselves up for stress instead of stability? My daughter and I have worked with enough military families to know these aren’t just financial questions – they’re about protection, about not letting your kids get too attached to something that might disappear.

We started slowly. Showed them what the Pensacola market offered in their range – not pressuring, just presenting possibilities. Talked through VA loan options they hadn’t fully explored. Walked neighborhoods near Corry Station where the commute would be easy and the school zones were strong. They loved the oak-lined streets of East Pensacola Heights, the way the homes had front porches and the kind of sidewalks where neighbors actually talked.

The home we found them wasn’t the biggest on the block – a solid three-bedroom brick ranch built in the 1970s, updated kitchen, fenced backyard with a live oak that had probably been there fifty years. What sold them wasn’t the square footage. It was sitting in that backyard during the second showing and watching their daughter spin under the tree branches, already imagining a tire swing.

The inspection revealed the usual – some deferred maintenance, an AC unit with a few years left, minor roof repairs. We negotiated credits, connected them with local contractors who understood military timelines, coordinated the closing around his duty schedule. They moved in mid-June, just as Pensacola’s summer heat was settling in and the beach crowds were swelling.

Three months later, she sent us a photo. The tire swing was up. Her son’s bike was in the driveway. They’d painted the shutters.

And tucked in the corner of the image was a small garden bed she’d started – tomatoes, herbs, something she’d never bothered with before because what was the point if you were leaving?

That garden is what I think about. Not as a metaphor, but as a real thing. A tiny plot of turned earth that says: I’m here. We’re staying. This matters.

Orders can still change. Markets can still shift. But sometimes home happens not because the timing is perfect, but because you’re finally somewhere that makes you want to try.
