Bringing A Lawn Chair

He insisted on bringing a lawn chair to the showing.

Not to sit in the house — to place it in the driveway.

When I asked why, he said, “I need to know if this is the kind of street where I can wave at people.”

The house itself was solid: three bedrooms, new roof, updated kitchen, decent price. But he barely looked at the granite countertops. Instead, he unfolded the faded blue lawn chair, set it at the edge of the driveway, and sat down.

For twenty minutes.

A woman walked her dog and nodded. Two kids rode bikes past and shouted something about a lost basketball. A man across the street backed out of his driveway, paused, rolled down his window, and said, “Y’all thinking about moving in?”

The buyer stood up after that and whispered, “That’s the one.”

Later, he told me about the last house he owned. After his wife passed, the quiet became unbearable. Neighbors kept to themselves. Weeks went by without anyone saying his name out loud. He didn’t just want a property this time. He wanted proximity. Casual conversation. Familiar faces.

At closing, he joked that the lawn chair should’ve been written into the contract as part of his “due diligence period.”

But he wasn’t joking about what mattered.

In real estate, we measure square footage and price per acre — but many buyers are really shopping for belonging. A good house meets your needs, and the right street meets your life.
