Didn’t Say A Word

The buyer didn’t say a word during the showing, and that’s what worried me most.

We walked through the house at a normal pace. No rushing. No criticism. Just quiet. In the kitchen, he lingered longer than expected, hands in his pockets, staring out the window. In the living room, he sat down on the edge of the couch instead of standing like most buyers do. I made a mental note but didn’t interrupt.

When we stepped back outside, I finally asked what he thought.

He nodded toward the front of the house and said, “My mom would’ve liked this place.” Then he stopped, surprised at himself for saying it out loud. He explained that she’d passed a few years earlier and had always wanted a house with a front porch — somewhere she could wave at neighbors and watch the day go by. This porch felt like the one she used to describe.

We talked through the numbers later. The comps made sense. The condition was solid. But the decision had already been made before any of that. He didn’t see a house — he saw a future that felt familiar, even comforting.

We made the offer later that day.
