The keys were already on the counter when the buyer walked in.

No lockbox. No agent waiting. Just a small envelope and a house that smelled faintly of coffee. Inside the envelope was a handwritten list titled “Things This House Likes.” It included notes like “Sunlight at 4 p.m. in the living room,” “Music played loud on Sunday mornings,” and “Windows open during the first rain of spring.” At the bottom, one final line: “Please let it be noisy sometimes.”

The seller had lived there alone for years after her husband passed.
